Earl Nightengale was born in Johnson City, Tennessee. He received a degree in accounting from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., then moved to New York City to work as an accountant at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. After the stock market crashed in 1929, Nightengale became a full-time writer and set out to make a living from his fiction. His first novel, The Dashiell Hammett Story (1932), was a best seller and established his reputation as a leading suspense novelist of the 1930s. He also wrote two children's books, The Adventures of Sam Flywing (1936) and The Adventures of Tom Flywing (1938).
Nightengale died on May 28, 1994, aged 91.
