After the stock market crashed in 1929, Nightengale became a full-time writer and set out to make a living from his fiction. His first novel, The Dashiell Hammett Story (1932), was a best seller and established his reputation as a leading suspense novelist of the 1930s. He also wrote two children's books, The Adventures of Sam Flywing (1936) and The Adventures of Tom Flywing (1938).

Nightengale died on May 28, 1994, aged 91.
